More about us

Merwehuis was built in 1938. The current owners are the fourth family to enjoy the spacious old home. They took great effort and pride to restore their house to reflect a bygone era.

Their love and appreciation for their own family- history is reflected in the names of all the suites. Names like Visser, Alewijnse and Pieters are some of the surnames of their ancestors.

Although situated in the midst of the vibrant community of Auckland Park and Rossmore, Merwehuis offers a tranquil ambience where you can experience home away from home. Since the establishment of Merwehuis in 2007, the owners have experienced how guests become friends, who return to experience the warm hospitality that Merwehuis has to offer.

Merwehuis is within walking distance of Johannesburg University and 7 kilometres from Wits. Milpark hospital, Donald Gordon Hospital, Garden City Clinic and the Barney Hurwitz Rehabilitation Centre are in close proximity. The SABC and Mediapark are within walking distance. Big sporting venues such as the FNB Stadium and Coca Cola Park are only 7km away.  A Park-and-Ride to these world class stadiums is only 5km away.

Merwehuis offers 5 double en-suite bedrooms, as well as 2 single en-suite bedrooms. All the rooms have self catering facilities. Breakfasts are served on room.

The layout of the establishment enhances the mobility for people who are wheel chair enabled. The different areas of the establishment are connected by means of ramps. Three of the double en-suite bedrooms are fully wheelchair enabled.

An in house conference facility, hosting up to 15 guests, as well as lapa, is available.
